The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has closed the beach to swimming at Keystone State Park, effective Thursday, July 18, 2024, because of harmful algae conditions (HABS). Water test results received 07/18/2024 indicate that elevated harmful algal conditions currently exist across Keystone Lake. The beach will remain closed to swimming until acceptable water sample test results are received. Other typical park activities on or near the lake are permitted with a reminder to use safe water recreation practices that help protect yourself and pets from harmful algae and other possible recreational water illnesses.
- Wash your hands after contact with untreated water
- Shower or bathe people and pets immediately after participating in water-based recreation activities
- Avoid swallowing and inhaling untreated water during recreational activities
- Avoid contact with water that has foam, scum, or discoloration
- Seek and follow any waterbody advisories or closures
For more information about harmful algae visit https://www.dep.pa.gov/Business/Water/HABs/Pages/default.aspx
As conditions can improve rapidly, please check the status on the state park website at https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/KeystoneStatePark/Pages/default.aspx prior to your arrival for the most up to date conditions.

Description
The 1,200-acre Keystone State Park is great for day-trips and family vacations year-round. Camping, modern cabins, many trails and a lake are all within walking distance, providing an ideal setting for wildlife watching or outdoor adventures. The park is within easy driving distance from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, the Laurel Highlands and their many attractions.
Recreation:
The 78-acre Keystone Lake has warm and cold water fishing. A fishing area by the spillway is ADA accessible. Fishing is prohibited at the beach, causeway, boat launch and mooring areas.
The park offers a variety of trails open year-round for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. All trails have easy access with parking available at the trailheads. Stone Lodge Trail is a 1.4 mile, steep loop that winds through hardwoods up to ridge top conifers.
Davis Run Trail is a 2.5-mile trail. Lake Side Trail is a 2-mile loop around the lake. McCune Run Trail is a short hike to a beaver pond and wetland area. Pine Trail is a short loop trail through a red pine and white pine plantation.
Lake Side Trail is excellent for bikes of all types. This 2-mile, level trail loops around the lake on park roads and walkways. Mountain bikes must stay on park roads or gravel walkways. All other trails are foot-traffic only.
Ice fishing, ice skating, sledding and cross-country skiing are popular when conditions permit. The day use area of the park and the cabins provide excellent opportunities for winter sports.
Facilities:
A public boat launching ramp and mooring area are on the north shore by the breast of the dam.
